Behind the design

About the car

The Gullwing’s famous doors were an engineering solution. Its lightweight tubular frame had high side members that prevented ordinary doors, so the hinges moved to the roof. Introduced in New York in 1954, the road-going 300 SL brought racing-derived construction into an unmistakable sports-car shape.
